YES! will begin to create a new generation of young Native entrepreneurs
A one-of-a-kind event – the Youth Entrepreneurship Summit (YES!) is an initiative of the National Center for American Indian Enterprise Development (NCAIED), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. YES! is designed for Native high school and college-aged students interested in business and entrepreneurship to hone their skills and learn more about what it takes to become successful in business. YES! events primarily take place as part of the NCAIED’s Reservation Economic Summit events.
Participants learn from accomplished entrepreneurs about the strategies, skills, and best practices that have helped them reach their business dreams. YES! events also gives attendees an overview of some of the basic fundamentals important to achieving success in the business world. YES! is interactive, as participants are encouraged to ask questions of the participating American Indian business people who have “walked the walk” in the world of business and can serve as mentors to the next generation of emerging business leaders.
About the National Center:
The National Center for American Indian Enterprise Development (NCAIED) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. With over 40 years of assisting American Indian Tribes and their enterprises with business and economic development – we have evolved into the largest national Indian specific business organization in the nation. Our motto is: “We Mean Business For Indian Country” as we are actively engaged in helping Tribal Nations and Native business people realize their business goals and are dedicated to putting the whole of Indian Country to work to better the lives of American Indian people- both now… and for generations to come.
RES New Mexico YES! 2015 Highlights
In what was a first for the National Center, and likely a first across Indian Country, RES kicked off with the NCAIED’s newest initiative, the Youth Entrepreneurship Summit! (YES!). YES! brought together nearly 200 Native youth from the surrounding Pueblo, Apache, Ute and Navajo communities. These youth were able to hear from people who have “walked the walk” and become successful, including Native American entrepreneurs, Pueblo of Pojoaque Governor Joseph Talachy, noted educator and speaker Dr. Christopher Emdin, chemist “Grand Hank,” and several others.
The look and excitement on participants’ faces told us all we needed to know – that YES! showed Native youth that they can be successful in whatever field they choose. We’re already making plans for an even bigger and better YES! next year at National RES Oklahoma 2016 and at other RES events across the country.
We were excited to work with UNITY – United National Indian Tribal Youth – to get the word out about YES!. The efforts of NCAIED and UNITY to focus more on entrepreneurial training and outreach to American Indian youth will continue to expand in the future. Stay tuned for additional collaboration.
